Educate before the “Grate”

If we want pollution in our streams to end, we need to educate before the pollution reaches the stormwater grates.

There are many fun lesson ideas to share with children and adults on the Salt Lake County Stormwater Coalition website, stormwatercoalition.org. You might also find our Teacher's Forum interesting to browse. You can even post questions to the forum community, receiving feedback from multiple teachers who've been there, done that, and are excited to share their advice. After you've tried a lesson plan yourself, you can pay forward the favor by posting your own perspective as well.

Hey, Teachers in Cottonwood Heights, here is an easy lesson plan:

  • Start out with Fred the Fish and Urban Stew (pdf 110kb)
  • Click on your school below to access walking stormwater field trip routes for your area. Have the children clean up litter around stormdrains and mark the stormdrains with a stencil available from the Salt Lake County Stormwater Coalition.
  • Have the children design a brochure that addresses problems that they observed. Distribute the brochure in the school and/or the surrounding neighborhood.
